Truck Question

Kinja'd!!! "Carbon Fiber Sasquatch" (turbopumpkin)

Kinja'd!!!1 Kinja'd!!! 62

I’m leaning towards a midsize truck for my next vehicle and unfortunately can’t wait for the Ranger. Which should I get? The Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon or Toyota Tacoma?

Kinja'd!!!

The Chevy/GMC is cheaper (better deals can be found) than the Toyota by a few grand but is it worth it to just get the Tacoma? I plan on keeping this for at least a decade (my current car is 12 years old).

Kinja'd!!!

Crew cab, V6 and 4x4 for both and I don’t plan on towing at all but doing almost every thing else.

I like the look of the Tacoma the most, but was really disappointed by the feel of the interior (sat in a TRD 4x4). Really I would have to try all three.

Even a 10 yr old Taco will retain at least 50% of its value. I also trust them to stay together better over the long haul. I like my ‘15. Never been in a third gen.

Given the choice....the best way to tell them apart is to sit in the back for 15 minutes. Whichever experience is the most pleasant... that’s the one to buy.

If you don’t care about the back seat passengers then reconsider your choice of vehicle!!!

The only downside of tacomas is that you have to go to the aftermarket for interior accessories (leather, heated seats, car play, etc.). But the upside is that there are tons of options and you’ll likely see 2/3's of the value back in 10 years if you keep it under 120-150k miles and get a v6 4x4

The Colorado drives, feels, and does everything as a car better than the Tacoma will ever do. Over that amount of time they will both be fine and reliable. Pick what you like. Buying a car because of resale value is silly.

Buy whichever one you like better. They are both great trucks. I drive a 12-year old GMC Sierra that I bought new. It has been rock solid reliable, and it’s still worth roughly 40% of what I paid for it.

I drive both almost daily for work.

The Tacoma holds value a hell of a lot better. Probably a bit more capable off road too.

But, the Canyon/Colorado at least to me feel like such better daily drivers. They’re just more comfortable and refined.

The taco will probably hold up better in the long haul though.

As a long-time owner of a ‘94 B-3000 (Ranger), I was planning to replace it with a Tacoma. Then I drove one. It was like driving a mobile cave. It felt dark and cramped inside, even with the double cab. I felt insulated from the road and not in a good way. It was, in one word, terrible.

So I bought a WRX.

Kinja'd!!!1

I crossed shopped the latest Taco and Canyon a couple years ago. Next month will be 2 years with a current gen. I wound up with the Taco for a couple reasons:

1: Resale

2: No depreciation, see #1

3: Standard lumber support

4: Manual

The Taco doesn’t ride as well as the Canyon. I didn’t test drive the Colorado, not a fan of the looks. In order to get a crew cab, 4x4 and lumbar support, minimum point of entry for a Canyon was a couple thousand over the Taco. This was a deal breaker for me. The Canyon seats hurt my back after ten minutes - this was without the lumber support. Prices are close enough to not warrant consideration if you keep the vehicle more than 10 years. The 3.6 felt like it had more torque down low. You have to wind out the 3.5 in the Taco to make power. Cam comes on at about 3200 rpm.

If the Taco didn’t come in a manual, I’d be in a Canyon. I would have figured out where to come up with the extra 4(?)K difference in cost.

MPG is comparable. I got a 2016 just over dealer invoice when they were less than a year old. I paid 32K IIRC. It’s good to never be upside down on a vehicle.

TL:DR

Ride quality/resale are the biggest difference. Don’t buy a 1/2 y.o. Taco. Some dealer were asking more for a used Taco than I paid for a new Taco.

I test drove both when I was shopping last year and in my opinion the Colorado drives soooooo much nicer than the Taco. It’s personal opinion, but I also find the current facelift of the Tacoma to be absolutely hideous.

But yeah take both for a test drive and buy the one you like, they’re both great trucks

After getting 20+ years and 300,000+ miles out of my S10, I’m sticking with the General. I don’t care about resale value. I keep vehicles too long for that to really matter. If/when this truck dies, I’m getting a Canyorado.

thats when I knew I would never buy a KL cherokee. Its not that I care overly much about the rear seat passengers (they have their own car seats anyway) but you could SEE where the money stopped in that car and it turned me off when I realized that the niceness of the car was obviously a show for the driver and please don’t look behind the curtain!

2012 TACO ODO:213000

Still runs like it did from the lot. Shiprock, BlackRock, Death Valley, Sierra -Nev, Cascades, Nw beaches, easten wa sand dunes and desert trails....still runs new.Descent control is a feature I love.

I’ve changed the oil at regular intervals with full synthetic purple since first change. Replaced front and rear brakes 2x. Regular maintenance as scheduled. Blower fan (mine runs 16 hrs a day...no BS @1500 DAYS)Front and rear shocks 1x. 5 sets of tires.5 tune ups....this model changes smaller intervals.Still have original serpentine belt.

MODS: 1in front lift( upside down collar) rear air bags to fix that Tacoma saggy butt. Armor lid, huge roof rack, light bar up front, forward and rear facing lights, strobe kit, additional inverter 1000...stock one is only 400 but thats good for most users. Bed lined tail gate and fenders. HID lights.(4 pair at 80$ each in 1.5 years for the XD)250$ fixed that pit!

I drive with 2 passengers always and our gear weighs about 700 accumulated.I log 5000 miles monthly in all kinds of conditions...never once broke down.

YOU CANT DO WHAT I HAVE DONE HERE IN AN AMERICAN TRUCK...AND ITS EMBARRASSING. RUNS LIKE NEW!!!!! I have the opourtunity to see ALL publicly offered trucks in America in their first 150k.....theres a lot with issues.

TACOMA ISSUES: Tailgate has either backup cam or a lock...not both. Gas mileage with full cap load for the last 5 yrs..avg is 16mpg. Headlights dont last if you drive a lot....and the driver side fog light always bursts the filament..so its getting HID low fogs sometime soon.

ANYWAY...thats my experience... and everybody that I’ve talked to you is similar class of truck has agreed and even the guys I’ve talked to hit on the Colorado have expressed to me they know it’s not going to last as long as my Toyota they can already tell.

With the time you’re keeping it, it doesn’t matter that much, but the Tacoma will have way more residual value even after that long.

The downside to the current Tacoma is that I keep hearing that they have been having serious failures almost right off the lot.

To be honest, poutine and tacos are kinda like pizza. There is a set of ground rules, but toppings and things can be as crazy as you want.

I’m trying to visualize how you’d do this to poutine without making it even more delicious. Thinking frites topped with queso fresco and enchilada sauce.

Although if the people of the US did it, they’d be McDs style fries or tater tots topped with fake american “cheese” topped and condensed cream of something soup.

You wouldn’t make a pizza with deep-fried bread, would you?

The thing is that, at least here in Mexico City, we don´t take tacos with that many condiments, certainly not with tomato cubes.

Beyond the fried tortilla, which should disqualify it already, tacos aren´t made with ground beef. No. Never.

I think that if we go back to Pizza it gave me an idea: just do the cultural appropriation alright! But call it San Bernadino style tacos or SB Tacos or Californian Tacos in the same manner that deep dish pizza is also called Chicago style pizza. That way you can chose to have that...thing or a real taco when you go to a restaurant.

hmm... if you really like poutine you should try to get Huevos Rotos. Its a Spanish recipe, its a bed of French fries topped with Jamon Serrano and a couple of eggs done over easy.

Called “Rotos” because you’re supposed to break the yolk before eating them so that it reaches the fries.

trust me, its good. I just suck at describing it.

Has she sat in a Ridgeline before?Because of the unibody, the interior is noticeably bigger than a Tacoma. And, on the higher trim levels, the Ridgeline feels a lot more luxurious than a Tacoma.

The Tacoma and Colorado definitely look tougher and more trucklike. But, the Ridgeline is a nicer place to be.

I think it comes down to one thing: How long are you going to keep your truck?

If you are going to keep it for 2-5 years and are worried about resale value, get the Taco. You will probably recoup the initial price premium and then some. If you are going to drive it until the wheels fall off, put the wheels back on and drive it another 100,000 miles, stick with the General.
